Abstract

In this interview, the Hecho en Genero collective addresses the issues raised by the Mayo Feminista, a student occupation movement against gender-based violence that spread across Chilean universities from May 2018 onwards. After situating themselves within the history of Chilean academic feminisms, the members of the collective highlight the importance of the student movement in challenging the social order imposed by the dictatorship. They then retrace the spread of feminist occupations across the country's universities, the depoliticisation of their demands by neoliberal public policies, and the internal debates within feminist activism. The collective also refers to a field survey they conducted for the Chilean Ministry of Education, which details how public policies against gender-based violence fail at meeting LGBTQIA+ students' needs. The interview concludes with an analysis of the difficult institutionalisation of feminist and queer practices and knowledge in Chilean universities, in a context of anti-gender mobilisations.
