Advanced Predictive Control Strategies for a Direct Matrix Converter
Keywords: AC converters; direct matrix converter (DMC); indirect predictive control; predictive control strategies; sequential predictive control
Abstract
The control of power converters has been an important area of study for several years, driven by their ongoing evolution. Despite the various types of controllers that have emerged, predictive control appears to be a scheme with prominent characteristics, particularly in terms of its good response and robustness. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison between two predictive control schemes, indirect predictive control (IMPC) and sequential predictive control (SMPC), in a load current control and reactive power minimisation scenario, considering two different sampling times, to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method under varying sampling periods. The results are obtained using a simulated model in MATLAB/Simulink with realistic parameters; they highlight performance in both electrical and computational assessments. This study concludes with a summary of the controller's behaviour and suggestions for future research. © 2025 IEEE.
