Optimised FCS-MPC Controllers for Standalone Inverters: Performance Analysis

Abstract
Ensuring high performance in the control of Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) is critical for applications such as renewable energy systems and isolated microgrids. This paper analyses and compares two Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) strategies, classic FCS-MPC (CMPC) and sequential FCS-MPC (S-MPC), for controlling the output voltage of a three-phase VSI with an LC output filter. Optimised parameters, including weighting factors for C-MPC and switching states for S-MPC, are derived through analysis and simulation to provide a fair comparison. Simulation results considering the connection of several types of loads demonstrate that C-MPC achieves superior steady-state accuracy (2.63%), lower total harmonic distortion (THD) (2%), and reduced common-mode voltage (410 V) but requires a more complex and time-intensive design. In contrast, S-MPC is simpler to tune and offers faster transient responses but at the cost of higher THD (4%), steady-state error (3.95%), and common-mode voltage (436 V). © 2025 IEEE.
