Abstract

Grid-tied microgrids pave the way for a smooth transition from centralised to distributed generation. The AC bus of grid-tied AC microgrids is commonly linked to the primary grid through passive components and breakers. However, this connection may reflect voltage fluctuations between the grid and the microgrid, and vice versa. Power converters can address this issue, and among them, a matrix converter stands out when small size and low maintenance frequency are needed. However, it is crucial to implement an appropriate control system for its operation. In this context, the connection of a microgrid through a matrix converter is investigated through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment. A comparison is conducted between its operation under classic droop control and droop control with model predictive control in the inner loops. © 2025 IEEE.
