Faculty and Student Perceptions of Inclusion: Validation of a Questionnaire in Higher Education
Abstract
Currently, universities must make progress toward social justice and the promotion of inclusive educational environments. To this end, it is useful to have instruments that make it possible to estimate the level of inclusion. The objectives of this study were to adapt one of the Index for Inclusion questionnaires to the university context and to assess the level of inclusion of a higher education institution using the adapted instrument. Through a process of expert validation and piloting, the Inclusion Questionnaire for Higher Education (IQHE) was validated. The IQHE maintains the three dimensions and six sections of the original instrument on which it is based and displays high validity and reliability. Furthermore, its application made it possible to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas of unawareness within the educational community, which we report in our findings. As projections of the study, it is proposed that the designed instrument be applied to students and faculty in other higher education institutions to support its validity. In addition, it is suggested to integrate the use of focus groups to further explore existing barriers in higher education contexts.
