Abstract

This study presents a systematic review of the teaching of statistics in the training of secondary school mathematics teachers, aiming to identify the topics addressed and the current challenges in this field. According to the PRISMA statement guidelines, the Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, and Dialnet repository databases were consulted, and articles in Spanish, English, and Portuguese were selected. From a total of 3,274 initial scientific publications, 12 articles published between 2010 and 2024 were analyzed in detail, as they met the objective of this research. The results reveal that a variety of statistical topics (measures of central tendency, measures of position, measures of variability, graphs for one or more variables, and tables, among others) are addressed in studies on the attitudes and knowledge of future secondary school mathematics teachers. The need to compare understanding in different areas of statistics is highlighted to identify which content is more complex and to develop effective teaching strategies. In addition, a positive attitude toward statistics was identified among future teachers, suggesting that teaching resources can benefit from this predisposition. From the articles analyzed, it is crucial to advance the statistical education of future teachers by developing innovative materials that foster the learning of statistics, while also considering research from other continents and expanding the scope to include more databases or repositories of journals specializing in the subject.
