Closing the loop: Bibliometric insights into lithium-cobalt recovery and nanomaterial enhanced lithium-ion batteries
Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of recent advances in lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling technologies and the application of nanomaterials to improve battery performance. The Web of Science Core Collection and tools such as Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to identify publication trends, key research topics, and collaborative networks. The analysis reveals a significant increase in scientific production since 2019, with an average annual growth rate of more than 20%. Key findings show that hydrometallurgical processes continue to dominate industrial recycling, achieving lithium and cobalt recovery rates of up to 95% and 99%, respectively. In addition, the incorporation of nanomaterials such as graphene, MoS2, and metal oxide composites demonstrates improved battery performance, with reported specific capacities exceeding 1000 mAh g-1 and cycle retention exceeding 85% after 100 cycles. These results highlight a research shift toward combining material recovery with performance enhancement strategies. Compared to previous bibliometric reviews, this study integrates environmental considerations and identifies research gaps related to scalability and environmental impact, providing valuable insights for advancing sustainable LIB recycling and second-life applications.
