Abstract
The microstructure and mechanical behavior of copper based composites reinforced with WC and TiC particles were analyzed. The materials were obtained by the spray forming process, followed by consolidation through hot extrusion. It was observed that co-injected carbide particles are efficient obstacles to grain growth (Zener mechanism) and that a high density of dislocations, produced during hot extrusion, are piled-up around those particles. Evidence of weak matrix/particle interface bonding was observed, suggesting that fracture is initiated by matrix/carbide decohesion followed by ductile crack propagation through the matrix.
