Abstract

In this research we studied if psychopathology can be reliably predicted from the measurement of psychological needs. Two samples of 150 participants applying for admission to a Chilean university, matched by gender, age, and previous university education, answered either the ipsative or the. normative version of the Inventario de Preferencias Personales (IPP-I or IPP-N; Bozzo, Castillo, Greppi, & Onetto, 1969; Vinet, Fuentes, Melo, Mun?oz, & Saiz, 1998), as a measure of needs, and the Chilean version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Rissetti, Montiel, Maltes, Hermosilla, & Fleischli, 1978), as a measure of psychopathology. Bi and multivariate correlacional analices between the two IPP forms and the MMPI showed that needs tend to be independent from psychopathology, leading us to question the use of need measurements for clinical purposes.
