Modernizing tensions and cultural conditioners of development in the south austral Chilean coastal seaboard
Abstract
In the last 20 years, the exploitation of merluza austral and subsequently the expansion of the salmon farming industry have had a significant impact on the coasts of the islands in Chilean south. Below we effect a critical examination of the second of these cases, considering the role played by the communities directly affected by this process. The text constitutes not only a critique of the fragmentary efficiency of the salmon project on a large scale, but specifically poses questions from the viewpoint of economical anthropology based on the local culture.
