Research and initiatives of revaluing mining heritage in Chile
Keywords: mining heritage, coal mining settlements, cultural landscape .
Abstract
At the international arena, the conceptual framework of preservation has been consistently evolving in the sense of adding more and new aspects that are valued, regarding historical remains. This process is at the basis of the contemporary appreciation of mining legacy as heritage and cultural landscape. In Chile, this shift has been followed by the interest of researchers in mining heritage; as well as by the implementation of several initiatives. Through bibliographic review and case study discussion, the article identifies two different types of initiatives; and suggests some specific opportunities for the preservation of coal heritage at Lota and Coronel, that uses the contemporary concepts of cultural landscape and heritage park.
