Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the production of statistics about judicial cases related to domestic violence in Chile, with specific concern about violence against women. It therefore analyzes statistical documents publicized by judicial institutions and organizations that monitor the latters’ work,both participating in the construction of domestic violence as an issue. In Chile, the judicialization of the topic of domestic violence has been brought up from the conservation of the traditional family model, as reflected in the name of the law. In spite of this, the article stresses, the politization of this issue has been closely linked to the construction of women as victims and men as attackers. We thus emphasize the importance of establishing differentiated categories that allow us to handle this issue and propose adequate responses to citizens’ needs.
