SHEAR STUD ANCHOR BEHAVIOR USING FINITE ELEMENT MODELS

Abstract

A commonly used experimental method to obtain the shear stud anchor behavior is the push-out test presented in [1]. However, the method does not address the incorporation of the steel metal deck currently used in the vast majority of composite systems. In order to tackle this problem, we used a modified version of the push-out experiment. Furthermore, a Finite Element model using ANSYS is presented to replicate the experimental procedure. Results from the modified configuration of the push-out are presented and compare to the Finite Element model. Variations in stud diameter (13 mm. and 16 mm.) and stud position relative to the deck stiffener (strong and weak) are studied. Maximum displacements and the stress profile using this model are calculated and compared to experimental results. The shear stud failure and the overall push-out test behavior can be adequately predicted using the Finite Element model when the stud is welded through a steel deck sheet.
