Abstract
Bureaucratic authoritarianism is a concept formulated by political scientist Guillermo O'Donnell to characterize certain civil‐military dictatorships as distinct from totalitarianism, populist, and oligarchic authoritarianisms. The main characteristics of these regimes were strong bureaucratic organization, technocratic decision‐making, demobilization of popular sectors, and the repression of political dissidence.
