Through the senses: Design and acoustic environment in a shanty town.
Keywords: design, environment, city, poverty, periphery, irregular settlements
Abstract
Irregular settlers in the city find ways of hiding their residential facilities employing a labyrinthic design. Social life takes place inside the shantytowns without being noticed by visitors or people from the outside. Communication using signs provides a resource that only the residents can decode and therefore they provide shelter in circumstances where exterior conditions are threatening.
