The design of a biobased insulating material for construction in Chile
Keywords: biobased material, construction, carbon footprint, energy content
Abstract
In Chile the growing need to design for products in construction sector has been a trend in the last years. Since the construction sector represents the main consumer of the materials from nature, and then, the process associated needs a high amount of energy is relevant put efforts in minimize it. In the same way, the criteria of energy efficiency in design and construction stage determinate the fate of the building along its lifespan. In fact, currently around a 16% of the total primary energy consumption in Chile is allocated to residential sector, representing an opportunity to manage. For these reason the Chilean government has developed an initiative called “Sustainable Construction Code” to provide a guidelines for convert the construction sector into a sustainable sector. Taking this challenge, in this research is proposed the assessment of a new insulation material for construction bio-based, using the biomass waste generated by pulp and paper industry.
