Abstract

AThe process is analyzed of settle of the southern sector of Atacama's desert, from his informal beginning and the configuration of a network of occupations of extractive character, which organized into hierarchy nodes were beginning in the port created in 1877. In this context the work centres on the configuration of the urban space on the coast and the incorporation of a set of inhabitants who developed into neighboring settlers and citizens who generated a port of services to the mining industry that provoked a particular type of sociableness, differentiated between citizens and workers who were answering to the demand of workforce.
