Abstract

The collection of texts published under the title Ethics and Responsibility includes the exchange of letters between Levinas and Ricoeur, and reflects the controversy between the two thinkers about the publication of Oneself as Another by Ricoeur. But what seems interesting is that unlike the criticism of Derrida in his essay Violence and Metaphysics (forcing Levinas to revise his thinking), Otherwise than being shows that things are different with the critique of Ricoeur. It seems that the state of development of the work of Levinas was in conditions to face the criticism of Ricoeur. Therefore, it is necessary to make a careful examination of the work of Levinas and Ricoeur, especially in relation the philosophical use of the biblical language. In a second time, it will be useful for us to do a re-reading of Levinas in light of the requirements imposed by Ricoeur to reflect a possible weaknesses of Ricoeurs " critics, and show therefor new way of understanding Levinas " work.
