Abstract

The paper refers to the experience focused on the competitive strengthening of manufacturing SMEs in Chile and the teaching of undergraduate students of Industrial Design, training them in the resolution of real cases and teamwork. The objective is to strengthen manufacturing SMEs, integrating improvements led by Industrial Design, in areas linked to production processes, working conditions of operators and diversification of the product portfolio. The methodology considers the stages of ideation, development and implementation of high fidelity prototypes, applying design research methods and tools that provide a guide for the process and collaborative work. Fifteen teams were organized to deliver solutions from design to the same number of companies. The results present examples of prototypes developed, as well as participant evaluations. The conclusions refer to the implementation of experiences applied to SMEs, in an environment where an open posture to innovation is necessary. On the other hand, the need is mentioned for students to acquire experiences that strengthen their abilities, through the resolution of real cases.
