Leaving fieldwork? Musical ethnographies and the perpetual insider
Keywords: experience, skills, music, fieldwork, self-ethnography
Abstract
The following paper shares my experiences and ethnomusicological thoughts on a common issue of anthropology of music: how to get out of fieldwork when musical skills were acquired and can still be used for performance. I argue fieldworks with people making music demand to become a musician, and also a bunch of writing strategies to express what you learned during but especially after fieldwork. I suggest self-ethnography as a good method to express subjectivity particularly the experience with sound in the performer-ethnographer’s mind.
