Women’s Work Trajectories and Workplace Violence: A Gender Issue
Abstract
The recognition of workplace violence has increased in recent years (Cruz & Klinger, 2011). In Chile, gender-based violence at work has become more visible (DÃaz, Mauro, Ansoleaga & Toro, 2017). In this context, this article examines the relationship between Chilean womenâs work trajectories and gender violence at work. This is a qualitative study that employs semi-structured interviews and biograms to analyze the work trajectories of professional and non-professional women residing in Santiago de Chile. The convenience sample used comprises 7 women (24-62 years old) who reported incidents of workplace violence as milestones in their work trajectories. Three types of gender-based workplace violence were identified: (a) condescending treatment, (b) discrimination due to maternity, and (c) sexual harassment. In response to these events, participants report reactions of resignation and resistance, which varied according to the type of violence involved, the workersâ educational level, and their subjective experiences. Sexual harassment produces work changes, representing a turning point in womenâs work trajectories. It is concluded that workplace violence is generally a gender issue, which stresses the importance of generating a work culture free from gender-based violence.
