Abstract

Introduction: diabetes mellitus is one of the diseases of interest in public health due to the biopsychosocial conditions it causes in those who suffer from it. Purpose: to analyze personal biological, psychological, and sociocultural) factors related to self-efficacy in insulin administration as a health promoting behavior in users with type 2 diabetes mellitus, based on the scientific output in Latin America, from 2007 to 2017. Methods: an integrative review was performed, to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the documents selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. SPSS software package was used for quantitative analysis and ATLAS ti for qualitative components. Results: the personal factors related to self-efficacy in the use of insulin are age, aerobic capacity, self-motivation, self-esteem, perceived health, socioeconomic level, and educational level. Discussion: based on the findings, the need to promote self-efficacy can be established as an element that contributes to the autonomy of users, this being a critical aspect that nursing professionals must incorporate to the daily care of those who require insulin administration. Conclusions: nursing care in users who administer insulin must consider the assessment of personal factors in order to optimize their interventions, particularly those of an educational nature. Such interventions promote a perception of self-efficacy and, as a consequence, the achievement of health promoting behaviors.
