Abstract

The karyotype of Alstroemeria violacea Phil. from Chile was described. The species presented a karyotype 2n = 2x = 16, and a haploid formula of 3m + 1st + 2st-sat + 1t + 1t-sat. The reported karyotype is asymmetric, with CVCL = 53.9 +/- 7.5, M-CA = 50.8 +/- 6.4, and TLC = 236.5 +/- 16.8 mu m. The latter is discussed including data of other species. This is the first karyotypic report of A. violacea from wild populations in Chile.
