Abstract
In this study, we present a list of beetle diversity registered in two wild protected areas of the Biobío Coastal Range, located in the northern part of the Biobío River: the Nonguén National Reserve ሺNNRሻ and surrounding areas, and the Hualpén Peninsula Nature Sanctuary ሺHPNSሻ. Both areas are part of the last remaining fragments of secondary native forest located in Concepcion. These areas are characterized by the presence of Nothofagus obliqua in the NNR, and sclerophyllous scrub and evergreen forests in HPNS. The list of beetles is based on literature records, the entomological collection of the University of Concepción Zoological Museum and field collections. A total number of 170 species were registered, distributed in 26 families and 120 genera. We found the greatest diversity in HPNS, with 87 genera and 113 species; in NNR, 60 genera and 74 species were recorded. Both areas shared only 19 species in common. Only one endemic species, Hualpenia relicta, was registered in HPNS. The need to carry out continuous sampling over time and to diversify sampling methods is discussed.
