Abstract

The founding, planning and management of Chilean cities played a preponderant role in the colonization of Indigenous Peoples and their territories, while today the participation of these Indigenous Peoples in Chilean urban planning is restricted to indigenous consultations triggered by Studies of Environmental Impact and approval of Municipal Regulatory Plans. This study analyzes how urban planning is related to Indigenous Peoples in Chilean urban areas in three case studies. The results point to the insufficient incorporation of the condition of peoples of the native populations in urban planning, having denied them effective participation in the formulation, application, and evaluation of those plans likely to affect them directly. The need for a better framework for the analysis of this relationship is suggested, materialized as a “contact zone” where different spatial-legal worlds meet.
