PATTERNS OF DISTRIBUTION AND CONCENTRATION OF EXTERNAL MIGRATION IN CHILE. EXPLORING LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY
Abstract
Migrations have become highly relevant in the Chilean political, cultural and social discourse. This process is addressed in the country between 2012 and 2017 years, understanding the spatial structures, distribution, diversity and the conformation of geographic patterns whose link with rurality, income and economic activities is explored. This is done on two scales. At the regional level, the general patterns of the distribution of migratory origins are determined, and later complement by an analysis at the communal scale level in which 6 clusters are established. The results show new migratory origins that break with the trend of previous periods, the existence of patterns ac-cording to latitude and the variability of the places of origin of the immigrant population, as well as in the concentration values for these. The above are associated with levels of both poverty and segregation and particular areas of the economy sector such as agriculture. © 2023 CSIC.
