The Normal School of Preceptors of the South. Beginnings of the training of "teachers of first letters" in a regional context: Chile in the 19th century

Abstract

This article studies the establishment of teacher training in the country, in a context of expansion of public primary education during the second half of the 19th century. Its aim is to present historical-educational characteristics of the Normal School of Preceptors of the South as the first teacher training institution established in regions, particularly in Chillan, province of Ñuble at the time. The pioneering character of this institution is established in the study, both due to the progress in its training program and to being the initiator of the teacher's professionalization in a regional perspective.
