Selectivity of Mn rich Ru Mn O phases in parallel oxygen and chlorine evolution

Abstract
Single phase Mn rich RuxMn1-x O2 conforming to a highly disordered γ MnO2 with pyrolusite-like blocks dominating in the structure were prepared in the low Ru content range (0.15 ≥ x ≥ 0.30). All synthesized materials were electrochemically active in oxygen and chlorine evolution in acidic media with variable chloride content. The total anodic activity increased with increasing Ru content in the structure as well as with increasing concentration of chlorides in the solution. The selectivity towards oxygen evolution reaction was predominant for all chloride concentrations (from 0.02 to 0.3 M), and its value was not dependent on the total Ru content in the material structure. The reaction mechanism with respect to chlorine evolution reaction was discussed on the basis of the determined order of reactions, which apparently increases with increasing Ru content.
