Local education services in Chile: Analysis based on agency theory Servicios locales de educación en Chile: Análisis a partir de la teoría de agencia

Keywords: educational administration, agency theory, governance of educational institutions

Abstract

This research paper analyzes the dynamics of transformation in the public school administration in Chile through the creation and implementation of Local Education Services (SLEP) that replace municipalities. The theory of agency is used to analyze the roles of actors involved in managing the SLEP. Secondary sources such as academic articles, databases, and public information on SLEP selection processes are used. Results show that the roles of agents and principals and their respective alignment mechanisms can be identified. While transparency and meritocracy in appointments are highlighted, the existence of two collegiate bodies with different levels of power to influence the management of the local service director is questioned. It is concluded that empirical studies are needed to better understand agency relationships in school systems in Chile and the region. © 2023, Universidad del Zulia. All rights reserved.
