Diaz, Nairbis Sibrian

Abstract

Online hate constitutes a threat to pluralism and coexistence in democratic societies. In order to understand it, it is crucial to identify the effects of new technologies in the reconfiguration of social relations. This study addresses online hostility by investigating its impact on information consumption in migrant communities. Therefore, it offers answers to the question: What are the repercussions of cyberhate on the informational practices of migrant communities in Chile? To analyze these effects, a quantitative approach is used, through a validated survey applied to 1,020 migrants in Chile. The results reveal that 41 % of the sample is highly exposed to hate speech, and that this exposure takes place mainly on Instagram (49 %) and Facebook (47 %) platforms. 30 % report a high avoidance to informing themselves through these social networks due to the reception of hate speech. While 40 % of the sample has eliminated media accounts from their information diet on social networks.
