Perception of forms of discrimination, in daily contexts, of immigrant women users of Family Health Centers in Valparaíso, Chile Percepción de formas de discriminación en contextos cotidianos de mujeres inmigrantes usuarias de Centros de Salud Familiar de Valparaíso, Chile*
Abstract
Introduction. The migration processes have generated new ways of territorial exclusion and discrimination in Latin America. Objective. To describe the discrimination perceived, in different contexts, by the immigrant women who use the municipal health centers (CESFAM, acronym in Spanish) of Valparaiso, Chile. Methods.A descriptive-qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was done. Seventeen immigrant women users of CESFAM participated. Semi-structured interviews, with informed consent and anonymity of the source, were carried out. It was constructed an analysis matrix of inmigrant women’s discrimination in public places, work, schools, and health centers. Results. Nationality and skin color are observed as features of the migratory situation and motivate them to carry out acts of discrimination. Conclusions. It is necessary a better understanding of the migration phenomenon, in constant increase in the country. It is important, in this sense, to create and orientate public policies, which respond to the existing demands, especially those regarding integration and discrimination overcoming.
