Guideline for Web pages design inclusive for senior users
Abstract
Nowadays, and even more so in the pandemic times our country is going through, the use of services via the Internet has become more and more indispensable for people's lives. However, the low use of Web pages by seniors suggests that their interfaces hinder cognitive and physical abilities of elderly due to their health complications. To address this inclusive challenge, a guideline for the design of Web interfaces was developed from the literature review and organized into the following categories: visualization, navigation, communication, cognitive support, and user security. Subsequently, 26 Chilean websites likely to be used by the elderly were evaluated with the inclusive design guide. On average, websites complied with 72% of the recommendations proposed in the guideline, the worst site achieved 62.5% and the best-81.3%. Although the results show that the evaluated Web sites are prepared to be used by senior users, there is still room for improvement in the categories of communication and visualization.
