Photocatalytic Degradation and Remediation of Microplastics
Abstract
The invasive microplastic pollution issue in aquatic and terrestrial environments has prompted a critical need for sustainable remediation strategies. In this regard, this chapter investigates the promising state of photocatalysis as a powerful strategy for the degradation and remediation of microplastics. Photocatalysis exploits the conversion of solar energy to promote chemical reactions, and recent innovations in this field have lined the way for novel applications in environmental science. The chapter provides a thorough outline of the crisis of microplastic pollution, highlighting its impact on the environment and the challenges related to conventional remediation methods. Various photocatalytic materials, including semiconductors and metal oxides, are summarized for their efficacy in breaking down diverse types of microplastics.
