Integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Unit Commitment Problem: a Review
Abstract
Purpose of review This paper reviews optimization models for integrating battery energy storage systems into the unit commitment problem in the day-ahead market. Recent Findings Recent papers have proposed to use battery energy storage systems to help with load balancing, increase system resilience, and support energy reserves. Although power system operations carry an inherent uncertainty due to the load, generator availabilities, and renewable energy sources, uncertainty is considered in just few papers. New trends, such as electric vehicles and transportable battery-based energy storage, have been proposed to mitigate the negative effects due to network congestion. Summary Recent mathematical models that incorporate battery storage systems in the well-known unit commitment problem are described and discussed as well as the use of movable battery technologies.
