Abstract

This paper aims to introduce and investigate the role of a wider array of solar PV technologies on the transition of a fully sector-coupled Iberian energy system towards 100% renewable energy (RE) by 2050. The approach used in this research consists of the following: i) reviewing existing highly RE system studies on Spain and Portugal and the respective role of solar PV in each; ii) introducing the newly added solar PV technologies to the LUT Energy System Transition Model (LUT-ESTM); iii) simulating and comparatively assessing several energy transition pathways for Iberia; and iv) discussing the relevance and significance of solar PV, in general, and the newly added technologies, in particular, in the Iberian energy transition on national and sub-national scales.
