Abstract

The project InES gender of the Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins (INGE220020) presents the dossier, «Advances and pending challenges in Latin America: Gender violence, rights and participation», which addresses gender violence as a structural issue rooted in patriarchy and other forms of domination, which constitutes a violation of human rights and an obstacle to the achievement of substantive equality. The dossier promotes critical reflection on gender violence in Latin America in different social contexts. Within the articles in this dossier, it explores key feminist movements in Latin America, such as Ni Una Menos from Argentina and Mayo Feminista 2018 from Chile, highlighting their influence on legislative reforms, non-sexist education and institutional change. In addition, it examines the role of global movements, such as #MeToo, in connecting regional and international struggles against sexist violence and patriarchal structures. Adopting an intersectional perspective, it looks at the experiences of women in academia, political violence against trans women, and the challenges faced by queer faculty in complex educational settings. In addition, it highlights how structural inequalities affect various marginalized groups, such as indigenous communities and LGBTIQ+ people, and proposes the urgency of generating comprehensive policies to eradicate all forms of violence. Through an interdisciplinary analysis, the dossier provides a platform to examine societal transformation, addressing issues of education, justice and politics. It stresses the need to dismantle patriarchal and neoliberal structures, promoting collectivity and inclusive societies. It seeks to encourage new debates and critical approaches, supporting movements that advocate for equality, non-violence and human dignity in diverse contexts. © 2024 Universidad Bernardo O'Higgins.
