Protocol and guidelines for the prevention and control of the introduction of invasive species into Antarctica
Keywords: Antarctica, no-natives species, bioinvasions
Abstract
The introduction of non-native species to Antarctica can have negative effects on biodiversity due to the lack of natural competitors and the vulnerability of native species to non-native species. Therefore, it is crucial to implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the arrival and establishment of non-native organisms, thus ensuring the protection of the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. In this context, the main objective of this protocol and guideline is to provide a guidance to avoid or reduce the risk of non-native species of microorganisms, vertebrates, invertebrates, propagules, and plant introduction into the Antarctic area, taking the necessary measures to reduce the anthropogenic impact of logistics, scientific and touristic activities into the white continent.
