Abstract

To analyze the conditions under which so-called independent publishers operate, taking as reference experiences and various international studies. A documentary-type investigation was carried out, using scientific articles that address the topic at a global level as sources of information. One of the most notable elements is that these publishers constitute an emerging industry, which, although they arise at a national level, in a marginal spectrum, are generating international ties that are positioning them in a globalized world. Independent publishers are here to stay and expand, generating their own sales niches, managing to survive in parallel to large publishers. Economic, intellectual, cultural and political conceptions position independent publishers against predominant unitary ideas that inhibit cultural autonomy. Additionally, ICTs have revolutionized all editorial processes, allowing small print runs at low costs; Thus, self-publishing increases over time, leading in most cases to the creation of micro and small publishing houses.
