Epistemic Life in the Polis. Ancient Insights into Contemporary Issues
Keywords: Epistemology, Political Epistemology, Platonic Epistemology, Epistemology of Disagreement, Epistemology of Testimony
Abstract
This book aims to show how significant Ancient thought can be for our understanding and promotion of a healthy democratic life. We are concerned with how the achievements of Ancient Greek philosophers can be articulated with current debates, highlighting that it is possible to incorporate ancient insights into present discussions in the framework of a systematic and constructive debate that has or can have a specific impact on practical civic life. In this book, we focus on the epistemic dimension of such a life and aim to address the citizenry incompetence worry that many political theorists have. So, this book belongs to the traditional regulative project in philosophy as long as we think that philosophy is not meant to be a merely intellectual exercise, but it is also able to shape our world and selves for the better. In this General Introduction, we present the Ancient protagonists and their main insights as well as the contemporary issues, mainly within political epistemology, which concern us.
