Abstract

introduction: In Chile, coverage of Papanicolaou (PAP) smears since the initiation of screening in 1987 has not been achieved. Reports exist of an association between sociodemographic factors and PAP coverage. objective: To determine the sociodemographic factors associated with PAP coverage in women aged 25-64 years attending family health centers (CESFAM) in Temuco. Method: A database from the year 2018 was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square bivariate analysis, and multivariate binary logistic regression (significance level of 0.05). results: Data from 1275 women were analyzed, of whom 698 (55.7%) did not have an up-to-date PAP smear. Statistical differences (p 0.00) were found in education, occupation, health insurance, and age between the two groups. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were obtained for dyslipidemia (OR: 4.99; 95% CI: 1.73-14.4), health insurance (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01-1.26), education (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.02-1.17), age (OR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89-0.97), and residence (OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.38-0.90). conclusion: Dyslipidemia, health insurance, and urban residence increase the likelihood of having an up-to-date PAP smear, while older age and rural residence increase the likelihood of not having an up-to-date PAP smear. © 2024 Sociedad Chilena de Obstetricia y Ginecología.
