Abstract

This study investigates how social skills are included in citizenship studies curriculums for schools located in the Concepcion and Arauco provinces pertaining to the Biobio Region in Chile. The study was conducted as a documentary based on a combined using a mixed methodology that had a qualitative perspective and hermeneutic design. Quantitatively speaking, the design was non-experimental, descriptive and cross-cutting with convenience sampling of 29 Citizenship Studies programs, specifically, in the area known as the Biobio region, The authors used a content analysis technique as well as a univariate and bivariate description of educational and socio-demographic variables. According to the study results, most of the schools promote between 4 and 5 social skills through citizenship curricular development plans. However, a marked difference was observed regarding the number of social skills developed among subsidized schools versus municipal schools, in the provinces of Arauco and Concepcion, and whether or not the schools were located in urban or rural areas.
