Abstract
This article presents a new proposal of synchronous reluctance motor for applications in electric traction, specifically in electromobility. This motor features a four-pole reluctance rotor with flux barriers and a stator equipped with a dual three-plus-two phase winding, which is its key innovation. The stator windings can operate in a complementary manner to enhance torque output or independently to improve efficiency and/or enable fault-tolerant operation. The design of this motor is inspired by the operation of some internal combustion engines that disconnect one or more cylinders to improve efficiency, especially at cruise operation. The present paper focuses on the description of the main concepts of proposed motor, the winding design, operation, and its validation via finite element analysis. © 2025 IEEE.
