Transnational migration crisis? Critical debates from the American Southern-Cone (1970-2020)
Keywords: Crisis; Historical cycles; Migration; South America; Transnationalism
Abstract
The article discusses the regularities and contradictions of the different forms of transnational migration in, from and to Latin America, focusing, particularly, on the Southern Cone. We reincorporated our research experiences in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, contrasting them with a state of-the art review on Latin American transnational migration. First, we will analyze the period between 1970 and 2001, characterized by the tensions of the end of the cold war, by globalization and by the emergence of a âmulticultural euphoriaâ linked to end-of-century neoliberalism. Second, we will address the âde-globalizing impulsesâ that characterize the transition between 2001 and 2015. Third, we will address the âpost-globalizingâ scenario and the âmigration crisisâ in Latin America since 2015. We conclude with analytical reflections on the uses of migrant transnationalism in South America.
