Universities are considered the paradigmatic example of knowledge institutions, therefore, they are expected to be led by people with the greatest managerial and academic skills available. In this sense, the main purpose of the study is to describe the knowledge management linked to the academic training of the strategic apex of Chilean state universities, in order to guide the definition of policies regarding the formal requirements that must be established to occupy senior management in this type of public institution. From the methodological point of view, a descriptive documentary research is carried out, analyzing the profiles of a total of eighty-six rectors, pro-rectors and vice-rectors. The analysis carried out determined that there is a low postgraduate degree, especially in the areas of social, administrative or management sciences; Particularly striking is the low percentage of rectors who have the academic degree of doctor.
