Abstract

This paper shows a vision of the incipient cultivation of date palm in Chile. However, the climatic and soil conditions of the area make the date palm a great opportunity to install in the Chilean desert a large industry dedicated to export dates, since the geographical location (southern hemisphere) allows the production of fresh dates against the season with respect to the northern hemisphere. For investors there is an important opportunity since much of the desert land is owned by the state of Chile. On the other hand, there is enough technological maturity to face this challenge of cultivating the Chilean desert with dates.
