Abstract
In this work, a Ti-13Ta-6Sn (at.%) alloy was mechanically alloyed and consolidated by ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS) to investigate the elastic response of metastable FCC γ-Ti after thermal consolidation. XRD and Rietveld refinement showed that 93.37% of the initial 35.45 wt% γ-Ti fraction was present. The sintered alloy exhibited a Young's modulus of 97.3 ± 2.3 GPa and a Poisson's ratio of 0.30 ± 0.01. Based on the refined phase fractions, the elastic modulus contribution of the FCC γ-Ti phase could be estimated. These findings demonstrate that UHS is a promising route for consolidating mechanically alloyed Ti-based powders containing a metastable FCC γ-Ti phase in a bulk form, thus enabling further investigation of γ-Ti-rich FCC-containing Ti alloys.
