Abstract

This chapter examines how future English teachers in Chile are being trained to utilise literature creatively to make language learning more engaging and meaningful. Traditionally, teaching has relied heavily on grammar drills and textbooks. In contrast, this approach introduces “Literature Class Projects” (LCPs), where teacher trainees design and try out lessons using literary texts. They learn to develop activities that blend language learning with cultural discussions. A key part of the training is helping them improve the way they give instructions, provide feedback and promote student participation through their voices and bodies using video analysis and practical workshops. These innovations help trainees gain confidence, plan more effective lessons, and make learning more dynamic. The LCP approach shows that literature can be a powerful tool in language teaching, even in resource-limited schools. It highlights the importance of training teachers’ interactional competence to communicate effectively to support their students’ learning.
