Effects of whole-body vibration exercise on lower extremity pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract
Background This review examines the effectiveness of Whole-Body Vibration Exercise (WBVE) in reducing self-reported pain intensity in individuals with lower extremity conditions. Methods A systematic search was conducted across four databases: Web of Science, SCOPUS, SportDiscus, and PubMed.Results Meta-analyses using random-effects models showed that WBVE had a large effect on pain reduction in both visual analogue scale (VAS) (ES = 1.51; 95% CI: 0.55 to 2.47) and numerical rating scale (NRS) (ES = 1.84; 95% CI: 0.36 to 3.32). However, when comparing WBVE to traditional interventions, the differences were small and not statistically significant. A moderate effect favouring WBVE was observed in VAS-based studies, while a small effect favouring traditional interventions appeared in NRS-based studies, though neither reached significance. Conclusions Overall, differences between WBVE and traditional interventions were small and not statistically significant, and the certainty of the evidence was very low; therefore, these findings should be interpreted with caution.
