Abstract

Increasing scientific, logistical and tourism activities are strengthening connections between Antarctica and the rest of the world but also increasing environmental risks. This chapter examines how human visitation can facilitate the transport and establishment of non-native species in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems, particularly through clothing, equipment, construction materials and vehicles. Examples of introduced plant species are discussed together with the heightened vulnerability of the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, where human activity and climatic warming are concentrated. The chapter emphasizes individual and institutional responsibility for environmental protection, biosecurity and prevention of biological invasions in frequently visited Antarctic areas.
