Abstract

Bleached Kraft mills discharge large volumes of brown-colored effluent as a result of the different operations used in the processing of wood and pulp. The biodegradability of Pinus radiata kraft mill effluent by activated sludge system was evaluated. The results show that the activated sludge system can remove BOD (85 to 90%), COD (40 to 60%) and phenolic compounds (35 to 86%) efficiently. The system was not destabilized although the final OLR was very high (6 gCOD/L·d).
